Welspun India, an Indian textile manufacturer renowned as Asia’s largest Terry Towel producer has joined hands with UN Women, a subsidiary of United Nations which works for gender equality and women empowerment.

The partnership will aid women employees at every level of the value chain. It will help them access skill-building drive in technical and entrepreneurial sectors with an objective to create sustainable livelihoods to set up gender equality in the workforce, equal payment opportunities, establishing a zero-harassment environment and encouraging female employees to hold leadership responsibilities.

Nishtha Satyam, Deputy Representative, UN Women, office for Bhutan, India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka elucidated that economic and human development costs of gender gaps are huge and if they’re bridged, possible gains can be achieved. “Introducing more women into the supply chain has the potential to unlock trillions of dollars for developing countries,” Nishtha said.

Markedly, Welspun India is a part of the US $ 2.3 billion Welspun Group, that currently has 23 per cent women workforce in its operations. The US-based group has set an ambitious goal to have 30 per cent female employees by the next couple of years.

It is important to add here that, recently the group launched Welspun 2, a sewing unit which is operated solely by women workers. The unit is home to around 800 employees from across the nation and also has a hostel which is set up to cater to the safety of employees who come from a different state.

Furthermore, Dipali Goenka, CEO, Welspun India also spoke on the partnership and concluded by saying, “This strategic partnership with UN Women will boost the capabilities of 500 women entrepreneurs and introduce them within organized value chains, making sure enterprise development, supply chain, and marketing practices that will empower women. Establishing joint advocacy platforms with UN Women will promote greater representation of women in leadership across corporate India.”
