Retail giant Walmart is planning to set up a depot in Vizianagaram akin to the one in Visakhapatnam.
The corporation had applied for approvals through the single window clearance system 5 days ago and awaits approval as they have already demarcated a site for its depot, in the outskirts of the town at Jammi-Narayanapuram close to the Gnana Sarasvathi Devi temple.
Deputy director of district industries centre, R. Papa Rao said that Walmart still has clearances pending from a few departments.“Walmart still has permissions pending from PCB, water supply department and VMRDA,” he added.
He has also implied the benefits of Walmart’s move as 120 people would be employed at the bulk depot and it will help boost the horticulture and agro sectors in the district.
The District collector M. Hari Jawahar Lal is also of the opinion that this proposition will prove to be beneficiary for the farmers in the district, especially those involved in vegetable horticulture and millet cultivation. He has urged various departments to speed up the clearance process and grant approvals.
As per the MoU signed by Walmart and the state government of Andhra Pradesh, Walmart is planning to set up 15 units across the state, especially targeting Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. These wholesale depots will offer a variety of products with the break-up: 60 per cent vegetables, fruits and other products, 25 per cent non-edible consumer products and the remaining 15 per cent hardware, electronics and other such consumer goods.
