The garment manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Karur districts are severely affected because of the cotton yarn price hike. And to protest this, industry takes to road now.

There is a 2-day-long strike starting today to protest against the cotton and yarn price hike. The strike is called on by several associations.

Members of the Tirupur domestic garments manufacturers’ association staged a protest against the unprecedented rise in the cotton yarn price, in front of the city corporation’s main office.

The garment manufacturers urged the Government to take steps to control the price by banning the cotton export from India.

The yarn price was increased by 40 per kilogram on all counts in the beginning of May and the 40’s count yarn is presently sold at 434 per kg compared to 237 in the same period last year.

D Ravichandran, Secretary of the Association, said the yarn price rise was due to increase in the cotton price. He said that the lakhs of people are directly and indirectly employed in the garment industry.

Nearly 50 per cent of the garment units in the district have temporarily reduced their production to tide over the price rise, affecting the livelihoods of their employees.

The Government should take stock of the situation and come out with relief measures to save the units that are on the brink of closure.

In another development, Naniyur Rajendran, DMK state weavers’ wing president issued a statement sand sought immediate intervention of the Union Government to control the abnormal cotton and yarn price.
