Labour shortage can increase in coming days!

Upcoming election in Uttar Pradesh, fear of Covid as well as lockdown and previous negative experience of the same are forcing migratory workers to go back to their states. It is imperative here that Uttar Pradesh remains one of the biggest labour hosting states in India.

Owing to good orders from overseas buyers, there is high demand of workers across all the apparel manufacturing hubs.

Reportedly, migrant labourers have started leaving the apparel manufacturing hubs and this is likely to create labour shortage.

In Panipat, Bheem Rana, President, Federation of Industrial Association, and Panipat Dyers’ Association says that another reason for their departure is the shutting down of units for two days in a week as per orders of the Commission for Air Quality Management.

Notably, in Panipat, workers are not worried about the pandemic, but about not getting full wages because of the five-day week rule. Already around 7 per cent of the workforce has left the city.

Panipat is one of the biggest home furnishing hubs of India and has the majority of migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh.

There are also views that workers who have already gone back to villages or can go back for elections will return in a short span and hence will not affect the industry.

In NCR, factories are on their toes to ensure proper availability of the workers as well as their safety.

Various factories are guiding their workers and motivating them not to go back. “As far as hiring of new workers is concerned, we are only hiring those workers who have taken both doses of vaccination. We have established a help desk in the factory and making sure that we guide workers with proper knowledge,” told a HR manager of a leading apparel export house.

It is pertinent to mention here that in the next two months there will be Holi festival and wheat harvest season, and so workers will once again go back to their villages. Importantly, workers as well as factories are keeping this in mind.
