Indian textile industry has welcomed the approval of setting up seven Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (MITRA) Parks and said that it will help India reclaim global leadership in textiles.

The Government yesterday approved much awaited setting up of 7 Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks with a total outlay of Rs. 4,445 crore in a period of 5 years.

Welcoming this decision, A. Sakthivel, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) said that it will help India regain its global leadership position in the textile industry.

“It will attract massive foreign and domestic investment in the sector making it globally competitive while helping create lakhs of jobs. The Government steps will help India regain its dominant position in textiles. I am confident that the textiles sector will increase its annual exports to over US $ 100 billion in the next few years. The sector, which is the second largest employment generator in the country, alone will play a major role in realising Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” he said.

Notably, the recent steps namely PLI, RoSCTL, RoDTEP, decision to clear all pending export incentive dues this year, removal of anti-dumping duty on key raw materials and fast tracking of FTA negotiations will greatly boost competitiveness of the domestic textiles industry and bring economies of scale.

Ravi Sam, Chairman, The Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA), said that the scheme and earmarking huge funds not only for common infrastructure facilities, but also for the production units will help gain competitiveness at the initial stage.

He said that the SIMA would closely work with the State Governments and the Central Government and facilitate the existing large textile units in the country to bring huge investments in these parks.

He added that Telangana might take advantage of the scheme immediately under Brownfield category for the Warangal Park. Besides, he said that Government of Tamil Nadu has already identified the location for the MITRA Park. He also urged the Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka also to expedite the identification of locations for the MITRA Park.

Raja M. Shanmugham, President, Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA), also welcomed this decision and said Tirupur knitwear exports cluster already possesses the textile eco-system Fibre, Factory, Fashion and Foreign except Farm, thereby fulfilling the Prime Minister’s vision.

He said this will enhance the competitiveness of the textiles industry, by helping it achieve economies of scale and will create huge job opportunities for millions of people.
